BOYS’ SOCCER ‘93-’94: SEASON PREVIEW : Corona del Mar
- Share via
Coach: Ray Hales (third year).
1992-93: 14-7-3, 9-2-3 in the Sea View League; lost to Hemet in Division IV quarterfinals, 1-0.
Key returners: Jason Boyce, Sr., forward, All-Section, under-20 U.S. National Select team; Dustin Lee, Sr., midfielder-forward; Eric Olsen, Sr., sweeper, first-team All-Sea View League; Garth Turner, Sr., midfielder; Jed Weinstein, Sr., midfielder; Mike Zoelle, Sr., defender.
Key newcomers: Brady Beecham, Fr., forward; Matt Hoyt, Fr., forward; Josh Weinstein, So., midfielder.
Outlook: Corona del Mar has lost only five games in two years, and two have come in the Southern Section quarterfinals. Boyce (29 goals, 14 assists), arguably the county’s best player, has been influential in many of those victories. “He’s like my right-hand man,” Hales said. “He leads by example.” Lee, who was a midfielder last season but will play mostly forward this year, should help Boyce with the scoring load. Olsen will lead the defense. “He reminds me of an old German (player) I knew,” Hales said. “He attacks well, he’s solid in the back and he organizes well.”
