OUTLOOK
The Barons’ shooting consistency might determine their fate. Their inside game and lack of height are problems, so when they they take the ball to the basket--something Strausburg says they will do much better than last year--they can’t afford to miss. The outside shooting has also improved. Fountain Valley has no one as tall as 6-foot-2 graduate Julie Murdent, its leading scorer and rebounder last year. Strange could emerge as the top scorer, and Ybarra could become the primary rebounder. Consistent output from everyone on the team, and the emergence of a team leader, will be the keys to success. Another thing that could play an important role in their season is the gym. It was flooded, and won’t be available until at least Jan. 1. “If the gym’s not done by Jan. 1, we probably won’t have any home games,” Strausburg said. The team is working out twice a week at a local health club, but whether they get in enough gym time to be competitive remains to be seen.
