LAGUNA BEACH : Hospitality Weekend Begins Tonight

This city’s traditional Hospitality Weekend, which begins tonight with a visit from Santa Claus, will include a celebration Saturday to honor Laguna Beach firefighters and police officers for their efforts during the October fire.
“After the fire, everyone kept saying: ‘We’ve got to do something for the firefighters,’ ” said Sandy Thornton, who is coordinating the event for the Laguna Beach Chamber of Commerce.
The chamber, which is also leading an ongoing fund-raising drive to spruce up Forest Alley, is encouraging residents to buy bricks in the names of police and firefighters to pave that roadway.
Hospitality Weekend events begin at 6 tonight at City Hall, where Mr. and Mrs. Claus will arrive via firetruck to light the city’s Christmas tree. Other activities will follow, including Christmas caroling and free admission to the annual Sawdust Winter Fantasy from 6 to 8 p.m.
The celebration for police and firefighters at the Bank of America parking lot at 5 p.m. Saturday will include entertainment for children and adults and a chance to sample food from local restaurants.
On Sunday, the chamber is making a pitch for residents to buy their Christmas presents at local stores.
“Basically, we’re just asking people to shop in Laguna Beach,” Thornton said.
