2 Rescued After Truckee Blast

TRUCKEE, Calif. — A restaurant owner and his 4-year-old daughter were rescued from the rubble of an explosion that gutted a historic four-story building and killed a carpenter.

“It was a matter of luck for her and her father,” sheriff’s Capt. Jack Bayer said after searchers pulled 4-year-old Madeline Bond from the rubble of Josephine’s restaurant about three hours after Tuesday’s blast on Old Commercial Row in Truckee, a scenic Sierra railroad and logging town.

Madeline was in serious condition with a head injury Wednesday at Washoe Medical Center in Reno. The girl’s father, Michael Bond, was rescued earlier. He had a broken leg and arm, and was listed in stable condition.

The dead man was identified as John Davey, 45, a Truckee carpenter. A sheriff’s dispatcher said Davey was working in the area, but it was not known whether he was linked to the cause of the blast.
