OUTLOOK
A wave of newness has swept San Clemente, with a fresh coaching staff and players--they call themselves “Coyle’s Army,”--who would rather remember last season for the friendships they forged than their record. Coyle has 13 years of high school coaching experience--the last seven at West Covina--and is fast gaining a reputation as a strict disciplinarian. San Clemente returns only one starter, but Mannix is a gem (22.3 scoring, 7.8 rebound average). No one’s expecting a miraculous turnaround, which is precisely why the Tritons could upset a few apple carts. “They could break into the top three,” Mission Viejo Coach Joe Reid said. Coyle’s appointment and revamped style of play--less running, more defensive orientation--brought some players out of the woodwork who are expected to take a bundle of the scoring load off Mannix, freeing up the second-team all-league player to do other things. Gardner and Reynolds give the Tritons the kind of height they lacked last season.
