At least one team knows for sure where it will be on Dec. 4, junior college bowl day in California.

Moorpark College guaranteed itself a berth by defeating Glendale, 30-15, in a Western State Conference North Division game Saturday night at Moorpark.

The Raiders (8-2, 8-1 in conference play) probably will play host to the WSC K-Swiss Bowl. Their likely opponent is Valley, which defeated Pierce, 27-23, in a South Division game.

Pairings for the bowl games will be announced today, but Moorpark Coach Jim Bittner said the Raiders want to be host for one.

They will enter the bowl game with a five-game winning streak and having won a second consecutive divisional title.

They also will be there with quarterback Todd Preston, who had a memorable night against Glendale (5-4-1, 4-4-1).

Preston, a sophomore, completed 14 of 26 passes for a game-high 304 yards and threw four touchdown passes.

“We worked really hard against their defense this week in practice, so in the game everything came pretty easily,” Preston said.

The Raiders, ranked 25th in the country by the J.C. Grid-Wire, also performed efficiently on defense, allowing one touchdown and a field goal. The other Vaquero score came on a Moorpark fumble.

Moorpark recovered three Glendale fumbles, had one interception and sacked Chris Ray four times.

Both teams entered the game with 4-0 records in divisional play.

From the onset, it was Preston and the Raiders who controlled matters.

The Raiders marched 75 yards in seven plays on their first possession to take a 6-0 lead.

Preston capped the drive with a 34-yard pass to wide receiver Alex Estrada with 12:17 to play in the first quarter.

Glendale evened the score, 6-6, about six minutes later on a blunder by the Raiders.

On a fourth-and-17 play at the Moorpark 30-yard line, Glendale punter Mike Sierra boomed a kick into the gusty winds swirling around Griffin Stadium. Moorpark’s Swanson Nunnery fumbled the kick at his three-yard line and Vaquero defensive back Ely Enriquez recovered in the end zone.

Preston went to work again early in the second quarter, connecting with his wide receivers for two long touchdowns.

On a third-and-22 play from the Glendale 48, Preston found Ryan Kieling in the end zone to give the Raiders a 13-6 advantage with 9:17 to play in the second quarter.

Preston struck again on Moorpark’s next possession, this time with a 38-yard pass play to Alex Estrada with 4:13 to play in the half for a 20-6 lead.

“Our weakness all year has been in the secondary and they exploited it,” Glendale Coach John Cicuto said. “That was our fear, them throwing the ball. We knew we could defend against the run.”

Glendale did a better job containing Moorpark’s Gil Carrillo, holding him to 62 yards in 15 carries.

Carrillo came into the game as the third leading rusher in the conference with 1,121 yards.

His main counterpart with the Vaqueros, Pathon Rucker, was leading the state in rushing with 1,527 yards going into the game and added 148 more.

“The difference in the ballgame was Todd Preston,” Bittner said.
