The Vaqueros’ early-season success will depend a lot on the football team’s postseason failure. Hamamoto projects four of his starters to be football players--Frank, Ramirez, Metcalf and Ross. “If they can avoid getting hurt and if they get their basketball legs early, we’ll be fine,” Hamamoto said. “We’re not real deep at any position, so we need these guys.” Frank led the Vaqueros in scoring over the summer, but he’s also the football team’s quarterback. “His football experience is going to help him in basketball confidence-wise,” Hamamoto said. “As a sophomore, he won’t be as intimidated as he might have been.” Parish will run the offense again and Ross, one of the better college line prospects in the county, will be the Vaqueros’ force inside. “I told Jeremiah he’s going to have to get every rebound,” Hamamoto said. “He doesn’t have to do anything else.” Toscanini will start at off guard until the football players return. Hamamoto is optimistic about his team’s playoff chances, but he has no dreams about winning league. “If Pacifica gets the flu, we have a shot,” he said. “They’re just loaded. The key for us will be staying healthy, especially on our front line.”
