Walkout Hits Caterpillar Plants: Union workers at Caterpillar Inc. plants in Illinois, Pennsylvania and Colorado put up picket lines to protest the suspension of a United Auto Workers representative. Reports conflicted on the number of strikers. The UAW put the total at 13,300, while management said 5,700 were off the job. Caterpillar officials called the walkouts “the efforts of a small group of union activists” seeking to force the company to accept a new contract. Union employees have been working without a contract since April.
