DAY THREE: THE SOUTHLAND FIRES
Fourteen fires that damaged or destroyed at least 554 homes and scorched more than 137,000 acres in six Southern California counties relented Thursday, as residents salvaged sooty possessions and mourned lost dreams. Arson was suspected in six fires--four in Ventura County, Villa Park and the region’s most disastrous, Laguna Beach. The Altadena blaze was attributed to a transient’s campfire. No deaths were reported.
