PRETORIA, South Africa — Police seized illegal ivory worth an estimated $300,000 and said Tuesday they had broken a major Taiwanese smuggling ring.
South African Police Lt. Col. Piet Lategan said 9,907 blocks of ivory seized in Durban harbor Saturday in a container bound for Taiwan represented tusks from about 500 elephants.
Lategan, head of the police Endangered Species Protection Unit, placed a value of about $300,000 on the ivory.
