Data on Derivatives Found Insufficient: Futures regulators said they are unable to determine yet whether complex financial products known as derivatives pose an undue risk to the nation’s financial system. Instead, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission called for a federal interagency council to monitor the largely unregulated, multitrillion-dollar market that crosses jurisdictional as well as national boundaries. The “data is inconclusive” on the risks posed by the derivatives market, but existing regulations appear adequate to handle the mushrooming industry, the commission said in a 600-plus-page report. Derivatives are financial contracts that have values linked to or “derived” from underlying stocks, bonds or commodities.
