Times’ Dave Galloway Is Remembered

* This summer I met a lot of wonderful folks working on CALPAW ‘94, volunteers willing to give of their time and energy for a cause they believe in--the preservation of local open space and public parkland throughout the state. No volunteer in the South Laguna signature campaign impressed me more than Dave Galloway, a 25-year resident of our small community, and the first to call and offer his assistance at the beginning of our efforts in June. Dave wanted petitions to take to his office at the Los Angeles Times (he was officially retired but still involved).
Dave was elated to be involved in grass-roots democracy in action. As the summer progressed, he came to represent for me the very best in the volunteers I worked with: enthusiastic and dedicated, cheerful and hard-working. When I spoke with Dave later in the summer he apologized for not having been in touch to offer his services again. He explained he had felt tired and was recently diagnosed with lung cancer. I didn’t speak to Dave again. He died peacefully on Saturday, Oct. 9. I hardly knew you Dave, but I’ll miss you.
