Sewage Plan Degrades the Quality of Life

* In “Septic Tank Dumping in Valley Debated” (Oct. 15), the statement by Bob Hayes, public information director for the Los Angeles Board of Public Works, in favor of the septic tank dumping site proposed for the Sepulveda Basin is based on misinformation.

Does the public information director not understand that there is absolutely no logical or functional connection between this proposed dumping site and the Tillman Water Reclamation Plant?

The wastes that would be dumped into the Los Angeles city sewer system in the Sepulveda Basin will not be treated at the Tillman plant, which is not even capable of treating such concentrated sludge. Rather, the wastes will travel through city sewers all the way from the Sepulveda Basin to the Hyperion water treatment plant at the beach before it is treated in any way.

Regarding Mr. Hayes’ comment that he has not heard anyone “complain about the Tillman reclamation plant being in the Sepulveda Basin,” has he not noticed the major earthmoving occurring in the Sepulveda Basin in order to protect the plant from the floods that occur there periodically? I have certainly heard complaints about the location of the Tillman Plant.

However, that is a fact of life, whereas the sewage dumping site is a further assault on our quality of life.
