SAN CLEMENTE : City Wins Award for Pedestrian Safety

Automobile Club of Southern California officials have presented the city with an award for pedestrian safety.

The citation was given to the City Council last week by auto club officials who said San Clemente was selected for the award from about 400 cities with a population of 25,000 to 50,000 in the United States.

“This program is an important tool in traffic crash prevention,” said Charles Kurtz, who manages the auto club’s San Clemente office. “It evaluates a community’s efforts to teach pedestrians about the dangers of walking near traffic and it helps pedestrians learn important safety skills.”

Auto club officials evaluated the city’s school traffic safety programs, pedestrian death and injury rates, safety legislation, enforcement, traffic engineers and public information and education programs.

More than 2,260 cities in 22 states were evaluated by the auto club.

A panel of traffic safety experts chose the winners.
