Security Force Revamped for CSUN Football Game

NORTHRIDGE — A reorganized and slightly larger security force will be in place at North Campus Stadium tonight for Cal State Northridge’s football game against Cal State Sacramento, a Northridge official said Friday.
Paul Bubb, the school’s associate athletic director, said he did not expect protesters to attempt to disrupt the game, as they did three weeks ago during the Matadors’ last home appearance.
“But my approach is to prepare for the worst and hope for the best,” Bubb added. “I’d like our events staff to be prepared the same way.”
When Northridge played Sonoma State on Sept. 25, protesters identifying themselves as members of the university’s Black Student Athletes Assn. and Black Student Union waved picket signs and chanted slogans alleging poor treatment of athletes by the school.
A security force of about 30--five uniformed campus policemen, five community service officers and 20 students--worked during Northridge’s last home game. Bubb said two additional community service officers will be on patrol tonight, based on estimates of a slightly larger crowd.
“We’re not actually beefing up,” Bubb said. “It’s more we’re changing the way we handle things.”
New signs have been posted detailing that signs, banners and leaflets are prohibited on the stadium grounds. Also, security that used to be pulled from the main gates at halftime will now remain in place.
Matador Notes
Matt Ornelaz and Jason Camp continue to juggle kicking duties. Ornelaz, a freshman from Bakersfield, will get first call for field goals tonight because he made a 25-yard kick on his only attempt against Nevada Las Vegas. Camp, a senior from Antelope Valley, held the job until he missed kicks of 32 and 35 yards against the Rebels. However, Camp has replaced Ornelaz on kickoffs. “Our kicking situation has been, and continues to be, unsettled,” Coach Bob Burt said. Camp has been the starter in four of the Matadors’ five games. Ornelaz started against Weber State.
