Credit Card Program Helps Equip Schools

About $5,000 worth of books, computer software and other educational materials are going to the Burbank Unified School District from credit card purchases.

It’s not that the district is resorting to plastic for its major purchases--at least not yet. Rather, the money for the materials was earned by people using a MasterCard issued by the Burbank Educational Foundation and Burbank Federal Credit Union.

Half of the annual membership fee and a portion of the interest payments from each card go to the foundation under the program. The foundation divides the money among the district’s schools, but card members can specify which school they want their earnings to benefit, said Linda Walmsley, vice president of the foundation.

The program’s first payment is to be distributed to the schools within the next month, Walmsley said.

The Burbank Educational Foundation is a 500-member group that raises funds for grants for Burbank public schools.
