NEWBURY PARK : Man Enters Plea in Assault, Drug Case
- Share via
A Newbury Park man who deputies say they shot and wounded as he sped toward them in a truck pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to drug and assault charges in connection with the incident.
A jury trial for Jeffrey Kenneth Hedlund, 26, is scheduled for Nov. 22. He is charged with assault on a peace officer, sale and transportation of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance.
The shooting occurred in June after Hedlund allegedly sold cocaine to a police informant, narcotics officers said. Hedlund was shot in the jaw, shoulder and neck moments after trying to run over deputies who were attempting to arrest him in a crowded fast-food restaurant parking lot in June, authorities said.
He eluded deputies for a short time but was arrested less than a mile away by another team of investigators who had staked out his home, authorities said.
The district attorney’s office in September decided that the two Ventura County sheriff’s deputies were justified in opening fire.
