SANTIAGO : A Tenth Anniversary

A series of summits that started on the Panamanian island of Contadora in 1983 continues this weekend when Latin American presidents gather in the Chilean capital.
Presidents of the “Contadora Group”--Colombia, Mexico, Panama and Venezuela--first met a decade ago in search of peace for Central America. The group grew in 1985 with the addition of Argentina, Brazil, Peru and Uruguay. After a 1986 meeting in the Brazilian capital, it became known as the “Rio Group,” including Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador and representatives of Central America (El Salvador) and the Caribbean (Jamaica).
As membership has expanded, so have the issues the group wrestles with--mainly hemispheric economic and political problems.
