Santa Clarita / Antelope Valley : Freeway Pipe Bombs Detonated
- Share via
Two pipe bombs discovered Monday on the Ventura Freeway near the Buena Vista Avenue on-ramp in Burbank were detonated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department bomb squad, authorities said.
No one was injured in the controlled explosion, said Officer Greg Nelson of the California Highway Patrol. The damage caused by the blast was minor, he said.
A California Department of Transportation engineer discovered one of the devices about 3 p.m., located in the wedge of land between the on-ramp and freeway road surface.
He notified police, and at 4 p.m. the roadway was closed eastbound at Bob Hope Drive and westbound at Forest Lawn Drive. Traffic backed up several miles in both directions.
Police at the scene discovered a second bomb nearby. The bombs were detonated minutes apart beginning about 6 p.m.
