CERRITOS — A week after rallying from a 24-point deficit to beat Fullerton, Cerritos wouldn’t allow Golden West to pull the same trick. Still, Golden West gave the Falcons a scare.
With running back Dione Tyler rushing for 109 yards and two touchdowns, Cerritos held on for a 38-23 homecoming victory over the Rustlers Saturday night at Cerritos.
Golden West (2-2) trailed, 31-7, in the third quarter before mounting a strong rally. After Mark Wersching’s field goal made the score 31-10, fullback Robert Fiesler, who had three touchdowns, caught two scoring passes from Steve Walker to make it 31-23 with 11:23 left.
Twice, the Rustlers had a chance to draw closer in the final seven minutes, driving inside Cerritos’ 30, but the Falcons’ defense stopped them both times on fourth down.
Cerritos running back Louie Major’s 56-yard touchdown run capped the scoring with 1:18 left.
Golden West jumped to a 7-0 lead on Fiesler’s one-yard run with 9:35 remaining in the first quarter. But Cerritos (4-0-1) scored 31 consecutive points before the Rustlers scored again.
Golden West finished with 468 yards on offense.
