Man Killed When Car Crashes Into Pole

IRVINE — A man died and a woman was critically injured when their car slammed into a utility pole early Saturday, police said.
The driver, Steve Evans, 29, from Arizona, died instantly when the car crashed at MacArthur Boulevard and Newport Coast Drive about 1:30 a.m.
The passenger, New Jersey resident Christine O’Reilly, 25, remained in critical condition at UCI Medical Center in Orange on Saturday.
Both were wearing seat belts and the car had a driver’s-side air bag, but the impact of the crash overwhelmed the safety systems, police said.
