FRIDAY FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Locke Settles for Tie With Roosevelt

Locke had four chances to score within its opponent’s five-yard line during the final minute, but Roosevelt’s defense preserved a 20-20 tie in a Southeastern Conference game at Locke.
The Saints drove 54 yards in seven plays to the Roughriders’ five. After two short runs moved the ball to the one, Akili Roberson was stopped on a quarterback sneak and Sirr Parker was halted on an off-tackle run with 43 seconds left. The Roughriders ran two plays up the middle as the clock ran out.
The Roughriders tied the score at 20 with 3:59 left in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Frank Madrid completed four of six passes for 45 yards, including a 15-yard scoring pass to Juan Rodriguez. The 55-yard, eight-play drive was aided by a pass-interference call against linebacker Allen Williams. However, Williams redeemed himself by blocking the attempted extra point.
Locke’s defense also made a goal-line stand late in third quarter. Locke quarterback Akili Roberson completed 10 of 18 passes for 183 yards. Rodriguez ran 22 times for 128 yards and a touchdown. Madrid completed six of 17 passes for 79 yards and a touchdown with an interception.

Jefferson 15, Compton 13--Isaac Hatley caught a 27-yard scoring pass from Anthony Martin for the winning touchdown and the Democrats’ defense survived the Tarbabes’ last-minute comeback in a nonleague game at Compton.
With 1:21 remaining, Compton drove 44 yards in seven plays to the Jefferson 10. Kicker Marvin Vasquez missed a 26-yard attempt with one second left.

Verbum Dei 12, Mary Star 10--Eagles quarterback Andre Miller faked a pass, dodged three defenders and ran 19 yards for the winning touchdown in a Camino Real League game at Daniels Field in San Pedro.
Miller, the area’s second-leading passer, threw for only 24 yards, but had nine carries for 86 yards.
Records: Mary Star, 1-4; Verbum Dei, 3-2.
Dorsey 32, Washington 7--The Dons used a ball-control offense and a stingy defense that allowed the Generals only six yards in the second half of a Southern Pacific Conference matchup at Dorsey.
The Dons were led by running back Chris Phillips, who carried 14 times for 112 yards and one touchdown.

Huntington Park 14, South Gate 0--The host Spartans shut out the Rams in their first regular season victory in the Southeastern Conference.
The Spartans took control of a scoreless game with 11 seconds left in the third quarter when quarterback Andre Medina connected on a seven-yard pass to receiver Manuel Palanche. Huntington Park scored again in the last quarter when quarterback Deon Mayes dived in on a one-yard quarterback run.

El Rancho 9, Bell Gardens 7--Junior Samano carried 27 times for 181 yards and scored on a 10-yard touchdown pass, but Bell Gardens sputtered in the second half to lose a nonleague game at home.
With 12 seconds remaining, Lancer kicker Robert Arredondo missed a 29-yard field goal attempt.

Bell 38, Jordan 6--Quarterback Danny Morales completed six of 12 passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Eagles in a Southeastern Conference victory at Bell.
Receiver Freddy Alcala and running back Heber Anguiano each scored two touchdowns for Bell.
Records: Jordan 0-5; Bell 3-2.
Wilson 47, Hollywood 7--Buster Bradley scored four touchdowns, including two on interception returns, to lead Wilson to its first victory in a Northern Conference game.
Mules quarterback Eddie Gonzalez completed 14 of 24 passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns.
Records: Wilson 1-4; Hollywood 0-5
Manual Arts 50, Los Angeles 18--In one of the oldest rivalries in Los Angeles, the Toilers rolled up 350 yards and routed the Romans in a Coastal Conference game.
The Toilers were paced by Dartanyum Smith, who had 13 carries for 121 yards and two touchdowns, and the passing of Kareem Wafer, who completed six of 15 passes for 182 yards and three touchdowns.
Sheena Onaolapo carried five times for the Romans for 23 yards and scored a touchdown on a 36-yard pass from Patrick Regan.
Records: Manual Arts 2-3; Los Angeles 1-4
Carson 35, Crenshaw 6--The Colts took advantage of numerous Crenshaw mistakes to post an easy Southern Pacific Conference victory over the host Cougars.
The Colts extended their lead to 35-0 before the Cougars scored their only touchdown, a one-yard sneak by reserve quarterback Ricky Lumford with 11:51 remaining.
Records: Carson 3-2; Crenshaw 1-4.
Eagle Rock 34, Lincoln 8--Running back Ternell Young ran for 204 yards and two touchdowns--one a 70-yard run--to lead the Eagles to victory in a Northern Conference game at Eagle Rock.
Tiger quarterback Gerardo Roman completed his first seven passes, but was sacked four times.
