Pakistan holds national elections Wednesday in an effort to end a long power struggle among the country’s leading politicians.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif resigned in July and dissolved Parliament after the military reportedly told him it would no longer tolerate his constant feuding with President Ghulam Ishaq Khan.
The dispute began in March when Ishaq Khan dismissed the prime minister for corruption. Sharif appealed to the Supreme Court and was reinstated.
But opposition politician Benazir Bhutto joined the fray and threatened a huge protest unless Sharif called new elections. 9.
