COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Rancho Santiago, Irvine Valley Win San Mateo Cross-Country

Fidel Zavalla finished third and teammate Francisco Vasques eighth to help lead Rancho Santiago to the men’s championship Saturday in the San Mateo Invitational cross-country race.
In women’s competition, Irvine Valley was first with 67 points to 70 for runner-up Orange Coast.
Zavalla covered the 4.2-mile course in 20 minutes 44 seconds, 20 seconds behind individual winner Darrin Rabb of Orange Coast. Vasques finished in 21:21.
Rancho Santiago scored 56 points to 67 for runner-up Diablo Valley.
Other top individual finishers from Orange County included Jorge Francose of Rancho Santiago in 21:26 and Dax Baca of Irvine Valley in 21:32.
Myra Medina of Irvine Valley finished third in the women’s race, covering the three-mile course in 18:12. OCC’s Adrienne Sweetser was sixth in 18:34.
Carrie Pacheira of Modesto finished first in 17:53.
In the championship match of the San Jose City College women’s volleyball tournament:
Golden West 2, San Joaquin Delta 0--Heidi Emmrich had nine kills to lead Golden West, which won, 15-7, 15-11. Emmrich, the tournament’s most valuable player, had 18 kills in six games.
