POP ALBUM REVIEW : The Easygoing Mr. Webb

Jimmy Webb, “Suspending Disbelief,” Elektra.** 1/2
On his first recording in a decade of his own music, Webb’s unaffected, down-home approach to his tunes--despite their sometimes dark qualities--imparts a strikingly easygoing quality not always present in other singers’ versions. Still, with the possible exception of the lyrically complex “Sandy Cove” and “What Does a Man See in a Woman,” most of these songs--such as “I Don’t Know How to Love You Anymore,” “It Won’t Bring Her Back” and the already-covered “Just Like Always” (by Joe Cocker) and “Adios” (by Linda Ronstadt, who produced the Webb album)--probably have more promising futures in the hands of other performers.
New albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor), two stars (fair), three stars (good) and four stars (excellent).
