FRIDAY FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Sentinels Send Grant a Wake-Up Call

Grant battled back from a 12-point deficit only to self-destruct, as Belmont ran away with a 34-20 victory in a nonleague game at Grant.

Grant, which shut out its first two opponents of the season, had previously given up an average of just 101 yards a game. But Belmont tailback Ramone Archie surpassed that all by himself, rushing for 154 yards and five touchdowns in 23 carries.

The loss overshadowed an excellent performance by Grant tailback Di-onte Smith, who rushed for 196 yards and two touchdowns in 13 carries.

Grant trailed, 12-0, less than 10 minutes into the game on two counter runs by Archie, but the Lancers overcame the deficit on Smith’s 58-yard touchdown early in the third quarter to claim a 13-12 lead.

After the Sentinels reclaimed the lead, 20-13, on a one-yard run by Archie, Grant running back Jose Amezquita fumbled and Belmont’s Willian Platero recovered at the Grant 38. Four plays later, Belmont took a 14-point lead on a five-yard run by Archie.
