Long Beach St. Anthony 12, Orange Lutheran 3--Orange Lutheran led, 3-0, with 5:33 to play but let it get away on two long completions in the final minutes.
St. Anthony took the lead for good, 6-3, when Tyler Tomich’s pass bounced out of the hands of a Lancer defender and to Ryan Hankins, who took the ball and ran untouched to the end zone to complete a 57-yard play.
Tomich’s 30-yard pass to junior Brian Walsh sealed the victory with 3:12 to play. Tomich completed 16 of 25 for 214 yards, 152 in the second half. Walsh had 12 receptions for 144 yards.
Joe Juliano, who completed 13 of 24 for 150 yards, drove Orange Lutheran to the Saints’ 21 with two minutes left, but an interception ended the Lancer threat.
The first half was all defense. Orange Lutheran gained just 101 yards and gave up just 95.
The Lancers scored first with 5:36 left in the third quarter when Matt Stratton kicked a 29-yard field goal to cap a 63-yard drive.
They got the ball right back on an interception by senior Brian Whitney at the Saint 35 but were unable to capitalize when Stratton’s 35-yard field goal attempt was short.
