The Pico-Union Improvement Assn. celebrated its first anniversary this month as members pledged to continue their efforts to improve conditions in their neighborhoods.
Since its establishment, the group has organized or participated in several neighborhood cleanups, tree plantings, anti-drug marches and a candidates’ forum. Meetings have attracted as many as 120 participants.
The group includes people who live and work in the area bounded by 7th Street and the Santa Monica Freeway to the north and south and the Harbor Freeway and Normandie Avenue to the east and west.
“Our goals for the next year are to form more block clubs and patrols to cut down on crime,” said Mike Hoy, the group’s coordinator.
