MISSION VIEJO — Matt Rechner blocked an extra-point attempt with 7:23 left in the game to preserve Trabuco Hills’ 10-9 victory over Dana Hills in front of 800 at Trabuco Hills High Friday night.
The Dolphins (0-2) had put themselves in a position to tie the score when Scott Covington hit Mike Whittaker on a 21-yard touchdown pass.
Trabuco Hills (2-0) had gained the lead on its previous drive when Derrek Uhl intercepted a pass from Covington and returned it to the Dana Hills three-yard line. Two plays later, Serge Gudowski dived over from a yard out to give the Mustangs a 10-3 lead.
Dana Hills had another shot at a victory after it pulled within a point when Trabuco Hills snapped the ball over the head of punter Toby Svarc. Svarc managed to get off an incomplete pass and the Dolphins took over at the Mustang 31 with 4:22 left.
However, after three incompletions and a procedure penalty, a pass from Covington was intercepted at the 20 by Randy Ortiz.
Gudowski carried the ball 15 times for 75 yards and one touchdown for Trabuco Hills.
Covington was 12 for 23 for 160 yards for Dana Hills, but was intercepted three times.
