WORLD IN BRIEF : LIBERIA : U.N. Links Massacre to Doe Loyalists

A massacre of nearly 600 people at a refugee camp in Liberia in June was carried out by the Armed Forces of Liberia, a faction loyal to slain President Samuel K. Doe, and not by the National Patriotic Front of Liberia, as widely believed at the time, according to a U.N.-ordered inquiry. The report said that, within hours of the discovery of the killings, Liberia’s Interim Government of National Unity, the AFL and international media had attributed the massacre to the NPFL, a faction led by Charles Taylor. The inquiry was ordered after NPFL denials, coupled with the testimony of survivors, raised the possibility of AFL complicity.
