GARDEN GROVE — Offense took a holiday Thursday night during Estancia’s nonleague football game against La Quinta.
However, Estancia had enough to prevail at Bolsa Grande High.
Fullback Mike Pawinski rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown in 20 carries to lead the Eagles to an 11-0 victory in a game that included numerous penalties and poor offensive execution.
The teams combined for more penalty yardage--198--than total offense. Estancia, which had 170 yards total offense, was penalized 10 times for 105 yards; La Quinta finished with 10 infractions for 93 yards. The Aztecs were limited to a net loss of 15 yards in total offense, including a net loss of 37 yards on the ground.
La Quinta (1-1) had an opportunity to win until the late fourth-quarter touchdown by Pawinski sealed the victory for Estancia (1-1).
The Eagles took a 3-0 lead on a 24-yard field field goal by Juan Rodriguez on the first play of the second quarter. Estancia made the score 5-0 when La Quinta botched a punt by snapping the ball over punter Toby Bishop’s and out of the end zone with 8 minutes 31 seconds remaining in the half.
Pawinski, who accounted for all but 29 yards of the Eagles’ yardage on the ground, scored on a two-yard run with 1:52 remaining for the final score.
