COSTA MESA : Police to Set Up First Sobriety Checkpoint

City police will conduct their first sobriety checkpoint from 8 tonight to 1 a.m. Saturday at Harbor Boulevard and Wilson Street.
“We want to experiment with the checkpoint to see if it can be beneficial to the city,” said Sgt. David Walker. “In the last few years, alcohol-related accidents have increased.”
Since Jan. 1, 492 people have been arrested in the city for driving under the influence of alcohol, Walker said. He added that at least three deaths have been caused by drunk drivers this year in Costa Mesa.
More than a dozen officers, including members of the California Highway Patrol, will be stopping drivers and arresting those found to be under the influence of alcohol. Officers will also remind motorists about the importance of using seat belts.
