Keith Smith
SCHOOL: Newbury Park
SPORT: Football
YEAR: Senior
SEASON AT A GLANCE: The Panthers’ quarterback will break the all-time Ventura County record for passing yardage (7,272)--set by former Santa Clara standout Tim Gutierrez (San Diego State)--if he averages 132.5 yards over Newbury Park’s remaining nine regular-season games.
WEEK AT A GLANCE: Smith completed 13 of 18 passes for 354 yards and six touchdowns (no interceptions) and ran for one touchdown in the Panthers’ 73-6 season-opening victory over Hueneme. Smith averaged 27.2 yards per completion and broke his school record of five touchdown passes. The Panthers broke the school single-game scoring record of 55 points. “I didn’t do anything special, I just played catch with my receivers,” said Smith, who did not throw any passes in the fourth quarter. “They made it easy because they got open all game. They all played great. . . . I really don’t care about the yards and the records, I’m just glad we won the way we did. That was a big confidence builder for us.”
