Ventura Man Lands State’s Biggest Bass

The biggest largemouth bass caught in California this year--18 pounds 8 ounces--was taken from Lake Casitas Monday by Jay Carter of Ventura, using a homemade lure.
Fishing in the late afternoon, Carter and his son, J.D., also caught largemouths weighing 14-0, 12-3, 11-0 and 10-0. The fish were weighed on a certified scale at the nearby Corner Market in Ventura. J.D. Carter had also caught a 10-pounder over the weekend.
Marina manager Randy King called the overall catch “the best we’ve ever had out of here.”
Perhaps anywhere. The previous top catch for the state this year was also at Casitas: 18-2 by Steve Gray of Ventura.
