TWENTYNINE PALMS — A 21-year-old Marine collapsed and died during a morning exercise run, authorities said Tuesday.
The Marine, identified as Pfc. Erick Stallinga of Grand Rapids, Mich., collapsed about 7 a.m. Monday after running 1 1/2 miles in formation, Sgt. Tony Sinagra said.
Other Marines tried unsuccessfully to revive Stallinga. He was taken to the base hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:48 a.m., Sinagra said.
“His death is still under investigation by medical authorities,” Sinagra said.
Stallinga was a student at the communications and electronics school at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, and had been running with other members of his company. He joined the Marines on Feb. 16.
