The Ventura County sheriff’s bomb squad removed a stick of dynamite from a Port Hueneme street corner Monday after evacuating more than 25 people from a commercial building and nearby homes.
The dynamite was discovered around 8:45 a.m. lying between some recycling bins at the corner of Wheelhouse Avenue and Harbor Lights Lane. Police sealed off the area and called firefighters and paramedics as a precaution.
Bomb squad members, wearing special protection suits, placed the dynamite in a trailer, Port Hueneme police said. No detonation device was connected to the dynamite.
The area, which is just off Channel Islands Boulevard between Patterson Road and Victoria Avenue, was reopened about three hours later.
