A freeway worker discovered a pipe bomb near an Artesia Freeway on-ramp Monday, prompting officials to shut down the ramp for three hours, officials said.
Police said they do not know who planted the device, which was found shortly before 11:30 a.m. by a California Department of Transportation surveyor along the eastbound on-ramp at Orangethorpe Avenue.
A fuse protruding from the bomb had been lit but did not burn into the explosive powder inside, said Sgt. Mark Yokoyama of the La Palma Police Department. The bomb did not prompt evacuations, police said.
Police said they are continuing to study the device, which was dismantled by the county bomb squad.
