SANTA ANA — Police Sunday were investigating the fatal shooting of a Santa Ana man, who was shot while in his cousin’s car.
Officers found a gun, a shell casing and two bullets on the floor of the car and are trying to determine if the shooting was a homicide or an accidental death.
“We don’t know if the victim accidentally shot himself or if someone in another car shot him,” said Santa Ana Police Sgt. Vic Faust.
The shooting occurred at 8:50 p.m. Saturday. The victim, Luis Humberto Rendon, 23, was a passenger in a car driven by his cousin. The cousin, whose name was not available, told police he heard a gunshot and saw Rendon slump over into his lap.
The cousin drove the car to Rendon’s home, where he got help from Rendon’s family and then drove him to a hospital. The victim, however, died en route to the hospital, Faust said.
