1993 PREP PREVIEW: GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL : NEWPORT HARBOR
- Share via
Coach: Dan Glenn (eighth year).
1992: 19-5, 11-3 in Sea View League; defending Southern Section Division III State champion, reached section Division I semifinals, losing to Laguna Beach in five games; finished second in league to Corona del Mar.
Key returners: Tina Bowman, Jr., 5-10, middle blocker; Jenny Hecker, So., 5-7, setter; Misty May, Jr., 5-10, outside hitter/setter; Melissa Schutz, Jr., 6-0, middle blocker; Sara Warmington, Sr., 5-6, outside hitter.
Key newcomers: Malia McAnlis, Jr., 5-7, outside hitter/setter; Laura Osborne, Jr., 5-5, outside hitter.
Outlook: Five returning starters grace Glenn’s state championship roster. If that’s not distressing enough news for the competition, only one of them, Warmington, is a senior. May is considered flat-out the best player in the state and Glenn believes Schutz, a first-team section selection, isn’t far behind. The Sailors’ schedule is tough: They open against Huntington Beach and Laguna Beach, represent the county in the prestigious (Chicago) Divers Challenge and return to face CdM.
