Teach Them English
In response to Jeff Meyers’ Sept. 5 article (“Area Lags in Hiring Bilingual Teachers”), we don’t need more bilingual teachers.
We need more competent, credentialed English teachers to teach immigrants correct English in an immersion situation. Only in this way can Mexican-born students have any chance of being on grade level with their peers.
The only children being “short-changed” as we lower our standards to accommodate immigrants are the remaining student population.
