National Video Rentals : Whoo Hah! Ascent of ‘A Woman’

Just when “The Bodyguard” seemed secure in its position at the top of the chart, it was ambushed by “Scent of a Woman.” Actually, the ascent of “Scent,” which features Al Pacino’s Oscar-winning performance, is no surprise since it’s been such a strong rental in recent weeks, topping some retailers’ lists. “Falling Down,” with Michael Douglas, moved up to No. 3 and seems to have enough appeal to take over the top spot. Look for two newcomers to do well in the next few weeks--the thriller “The Temp” (No. 21) and “Boiling Point,” the Wesley Snipes drama (No. 22). The action- drama “Point of No Return,” with Bridget Fonda, opened at No. 40 but should take a big leap next week.
* “Groundhog Day,” which premiered at No. 11, should scamper into the Top 5 in the next week or two. Starring Bill Murray, it was certainly a favorite of moviegoers, raking in more than $70 million. Being the only fun, high-grossing romantic comedy to come out recently, it hasthat segment of the market to itself.
