DEL MAR : Frankel Taps French Connection

DEL MAR — Trainer Bobby Frankel, who has had good fortune with one French import this summer, will try another Saturday in the $100,000 Palomar Handicap for older fillies and mares.

Nidd, a 3-year-old filly owned by Juddmonte Farms, was flown to Los Angeles on Monday and was expected to arrive here late Wednesday. She has been assigned 113 pounds for the Palomar, including jockey Gary Stevens.

Frankel’s other French import is Luazur, who won the Escondido Handicap on Aug. 14 and then stunned 2-5 favorite Kotashaan by a nose to win the Del Mar Handicap on Sunday.

Frankel is having an excellent meeting, highlighted by Bertrando leading a one-two-four finish for him in the Pacific Classic. Marquetry, the fourth-place finisher in the Classic, is top-weighted at 121 pounds for Sunday’s Del Mar Budweiser Breeders’ Cup Handicap.

The top-weighted horses for the Palomar Handicap are Fowda and Heart Of Joy, each assigned 119 pounds.

Jockey Aaron Gryder, who has been racing in Chicago, will return to regular riding in California when Hollywood Park opens Nov. 17. . . . Laffit Pincay has accepted the ride on Siberian Summer in the Breeders’ Cup Handicap.
