LOS ANGELES : Council Votes Opposition to School Voucher Plan

The Los Angeles City Council unanimously expressed its opposition Wednesday to Proposition 174, the state school voucher measure.

Council members said the measure--which would create vouchers worth about $2,600 per child, to be redeemed at private schools--would drain critical resources away from the public school system.

Councilwoman Rita Walters, a former member of the Los Angeles Unified School District Board, led the opposition to the initiative. The council voted 14 to 0 in favor of her position.
