MAGDEBURG, Germany — Three German states banned the former German imperial war flag Tuesday, bringing to six the number of states to outlaw the banner, which has appeared frequently at neo-Nazi gatherings.
The three states acting Tuesday were Saxony-Anhalt in eastern Germany, Berlin and the west German state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Following the lead of the eastern state of Brandenburg two weeks ago, the western states of Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate also have banned the flag, which bears an eagle and an iron cross and was used by the German navy until World War II.
