From Times Staff and Wire Reports
New England’s tallest lighthouse was pushed back from Block Island’s eroding clay cliffs in the first phase of a rescue effort that organizers hope will lead to its restoration. Four hydraulic pumps pushed the 2,000-ton, 120-year-old structure along a steel track in a $2.3-million relocation at New Shoreham that should be completed next month. With one-third of the job done, workers will now lay a steel and wood track for the remaining push of more than 130 feet.
