Karch Kiraly of San Clemente and Kent Steffes of Pacific Palisades will try to win their seventh consecutive pro beach volleyball tournament this weekend in the $150,000 Miller Lite Open at Seal Beach.
Kiraly and Steffes have won 14 of 18 tournaments this season, including 10 of the past 11, and lead the tour in prize money with $226,937 each.
They are top-seeded in the double-elimination event, which begins at 9 a.m. today at the north side of the Seal Beach Pier.
Kiraly and Steffes took a 13-tournament winning streak into last year’s Seal Beach competition, but were eliminated on the final day by Brian Lewis and Mike Whitmarsh. Kiraly has never won at Seal Beach in the tournament’s 10-year history. Steffes won it in 1989 with Jon Stevenson.
Cammy Ciarelli of Huntington Beach and Holly McPeak of Manhattan Beach are top-seeded in the women’s tournament. Ciarelli and McPeak won four consecutive tournaments, but lost to Linda Hanley and Jackie Silva, 15-14, in overtime last weekend at Grand Haven, Mich.
