VENTURA : Talk-Show Host Now Recuperating

Radio talk-show host Frank Haines, a fixture for 41 years at Ventura’s KVEN (1450-AM) radio station, was recuperating Tuesday after the amputation of his left leg, station officials said.
Haines, 60, of Ventura was admitted to UCLA Medical Center in Westwood on June 10 after suffering pain in his legs. Doctors there tried to control the circulatory problem with drugs, but the effort was unsuccessful.
Haines, who contracted polio as a youth, has experienced problems from post-polio syndrome, as well as surviving a heart attack and heart-bypass surgery in 1991, Dave Loe, the station’s general manager, said.
Haines, who joined the station in 1952 and began hosting an evening talk show in the mid-1960s, has been awarded multiple regional Golden Mike awards for his commentary.
In recent years, his news-and-opinion show has aired from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Station officials say they plan to continue Haines’ talk show during his absence with the help of several substitutes.
