TV Ratings : Hoopsters, Perennial Favorites Pace the Top 10

Just as John Paxson delivered the winning three-point shot for Chicago, the NBA delivered winning ratings for NBC last week. Figures released Tuesday by the A.C. Nielsen Co. showed that the championship series between Paxson’s Bulls and the Phoenix Suns was the most-watched NBA finals in history, and Sunday’s conclusion was the second highest-rated NBA game ever, surpassed only by Game 7 of the Lakers-Pistons match in 1988.
Otherwise, Americans turned mostly to their favorites last week, reruns notwithstanding. ABC’s “Home Improvement,” “Roseanne,” “PrimeTime Live” and “Coach” all finished in the Top 10.

Incorrect TV ratings-- Because of a calculation error by the A. C. Nielsen Co., ratings for most prime-time television programs broadcast June 14-20 were one-tenth to two-tenths of a point lower than reported in Wednesday’s editions of The Times. The order of the programs was not affected, however. Figures for the week’s three NBA finals games reported in a separate story Wednesday were not impacted because statistics supplied by NBC matched the final corrected results from the A. C. Nielsen Co.
In its first outing, “Eye to Eye With Connie Chung” tied for No. 20 among the week’s 95 prime-time programs. The CBS newsmagazine won its first half-hour on Thursday from 9 to 9:30 p.m., then finished second from 9:30 to 10 behind a rerun of NBC’s “Seinfeld.”
And a cultural note: Paul McCartney’s first-run concert on Fox last week ranked No. 78, while a rerun of a Billy Ray Cyrus special on ABC placed 56th.
