OXNARD : Fire Destroys Garage That Housed Family
- Share via
A residential fire Wednesday in south Oxnard that destroyed the garage living quarters of a family was accidentally started by two children playing with matches, fire officials said.
The fire in the garage of the ranch-style home at 540 Campbell Way was reported at 1:20 p.m. and initially doused by Oxnard firefighters in 10 minutes, said Oxnard Fire Capt. Scott Samways.
The fire swept through small cubicles that had been erected in the garage where a family of four was living.
Embers from the fire apparently remained in the garage rafters and reignited the fire two hours later, said Oxnard Fire Battalion Chief Terry McAnally.
Damage from the fire was contained to the garage, Samways said. The main part of the house, where a couple and four children live, was spared.
Samways estimated that the fire caused $4,500 damage to the garage and its contents.
