Echo Park : New Sentence for Slumlord

A convicted slumlord who owns an Echo Park apartment complex has been sentenced to 150 hours of community service after failing to finish repairs and renovations to his building, officials said.

Sun Ly Lim, 48, of Long Beach admitted Tuesday before Los Angeles Municipal Commissioner Abe Kahn that he violated his probation for the second time in three months, Los Angeles Deputy City Atty. Michael R. Wilkinson said. Kahn then ordered him to serve 150 hours at the Midnight Mission in downtown Los Angeles by Jan. 11. Lim will also have to pay $1,452 in city investigative costs, Wilkinson said.

Lim owns a three-story, 14-unit apartment building at 1410 Sunset Blvd. that has been found to have cockroach infestations, worn-out carpeting, leaky ceilings and missing or broken smoke detectors, according to city inspectors’ reports. Last November, he pleaded no contest to six violations of health and building and safety codes and was given an April 20 deadline to make required repairs.

Lim’s first probation violation came after failing to meet that deadline. He was sentenced to 30 days of house arrest in one of his own apartments and served three days in County Jail for allegedly tampering with equipment used to monitor his house arrest.

On Tuesday, the landlord was given a July 28 deadline to complete repairs and renovations to his building and ordered to return to court Aug. 17.
